Any good books or dvd's for training weims for hunting. I just rescued a 4yr old female that definatly had extensive obedience training. My bf had been wanting a dog (for hunting/companion) so we got her. She is very smart (problem is she likes to jump on counters and tear garbage) but we are working with that. It may have been due to the fact that they couldn't afford to feed her and needs about 30lbs. So any good info for us looking to train her for hunting?

I think it's far better to do than to read, but there are some good books out there. I am a huge believer in the West/Gibbons method so would suggest Gibbons' seminar DVD which can be purchased here: http://www.higginsgundogs.com/store.htm

Luna is our first dog, and we plan on hunting her but had NO idea where to start with training.

Through the suggestion of someone on this board, my husband and I joined NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) - www.navhda.org - this web site can direct you to your local chapter.

We joined up with our local chapter (Minneapolis, MN) and have met up with some GREAT people with loads of knowledge and advice. We are very happy to be part of the organization and can't wait for spring so we can get out of the classroom and into the field!

Wait...you're in a classroom setting?
Our chapter ALWAYS has training weekends outdoors. In May-Aug training weekend's are up here in Flagstaff and the rest of the year it's held in the desert, about an hour and a half from Flagstaff.

Yeah, it's winter here in Minnesota, which means today it was only 18 degrees outside, and that is a 30-40 degree improvement from last weekend! Shocked We joined a class through our local chapter called "pointing dog obedience" which starts dogs 6 months and up on the basics of whoa, come, heel, down, etc. We're 4 weeks into the 10 week course currently. We will start training weekends the begining of april and those are held outside... Smile

In hindsight it would've been nice if I had a class like that, but no...I was all on my own. Confused HAHA, it was a good learning experience though!
You're lucky to have those resources!

For books, I recommend Delmar Smith's books.
For videos, the perfect start videos are very good.

Paul Longs book is pretty good to, and another classic is Robert Wehles
"Wing and Shot". Also, Joan Baily wrote "How to help gun dogs help themselves" . There may also be a video of Wing and Shot Not sure exactly but I think so. Also, Gun dog by Richard Wolters is a good one too. I have had all of them, but I loan them out and sometimes they don't come back Rolling Eyes

I have the book "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves" and it's very informative.
