I love looking at these pictures!!
My husband hunts, but not birds, because there just aren`t that many in Kentucky.
Although, I think with the new puppy, we may try. There are preserves that we can pay to hunt on here.
I`m wokring on my shooting skills :)

miloandme wrote:Yay! Thanks for posting those pictures. I loooove seeing South Dakota & Weims all in the same picture. And a rooster too, even better! How were the birds? Were there lots of them? Did they have the crops harvested? When I went in October there were lots of birds but they had so many places to hide because all the crops were still in. Glad to hear Luce is doing so well. And as far as Luna, I'm sure if you just keep her on wild birds she'll overcome any training errors. As long as she loves birds and loves finding them then that's great. And it's always great to have a dog who's fanatical about finding downed birds and retrieving them.

Amy,

There were alot of birds, but they were hard to get close to. Most of the crops were down, and luck have it the nights were cold enough to freeze most of the muck.

I have faith that Luna will come around... and if she doesn't, so what! She loves to hunt and she's handy for finding downed birds. She even managed to catch a crippled rooster that wasn't shot by anybody on our party :) For a dog that we got from a BYB, and have made about every training mistake there is on (she's our first) she is a wonderful girl.

Maybe someday we'll meet up in SD! We were supposed to go in October but our hosts ended up with the bad flu and we opted to postpone the trip.

Dakota Pheasant Hunting in Strasburg, CO.

Very pleased with Dakota - he did awesome! We had gone out once in the fall and it was an 80 degree day and really dry - didn't have much luck.
We went back today - nice and cold with some snow on the ground - as far as I am concerned, Dakota was a rock star. When he was pointing, he didn't budge. He was doing so well that I was able to take my camera out of my bag, turn it on, take a couple of pics, turn it off put it back in the back and then say "go" for him to flush. Way to go Dakota! :D :D :D

I'm sooo jealous. We have decided the next weim we get we would really like it to hunt. My hubby really enjoys hunting. I wouldnt even know where to start if and when we wanted to try it. Any pointers? (no pun intended :D )

Our local Weim rescue is an arm of the local Weimaraner club. We went to a few of the meetings then went to a few field trials just to watch. Last winter one of the guys in the Weim club asked if we wanted to tag along to see if we liked it and if Dakota had any interest in birds. Dakota seemed to like the idea and had a really good nose. Over the past summer we went to a 3 day bird dog class, and an introduction to pointing class. We kept working on the things that we learned in the classes and started hunting this past fall. It gives Dakota and I something to focus on with regards to training and mental stimulation ... and keeps us both out of trouble. =)

Also, I hadn't touched a shotgun in over 20 years. My friend took me to the American Legion in our area - they have a trap shooting range - and I got up to speed on shooting (which still needs some work). :D

Yeah, your local weim club probably has "learn to hunt days" or something like that. There is also probably a NAVHDA chapter in your area and they're great for newbies (http://www.navhda.org). You can also show up to a hunt test like dakota's dad suggested...I wouldn't recommend just "showing up" to a field trial unless someone is going to meet you there and show you the ropes. Not the best venue for a beginner only bc everyone is busy with dogs and horses and it can come off as being snooty. Not the case, though!

Good point - we had someone there to show us the ropes and the Weim club had horses. I didn't realize that for the field trials "observing" meant riding a horse - my wife grew up on a ranch ... so no big deal ... I received an ad hoc refresher course as my wife pointed out what I was doing wrong along the way. All of the "action" was ~3/4 of a mile away from where everyone was parked and staged.

One of the events that we went to was put on by the Vizsla Club ... basically it was a good fund raising event for the Vizsla Club and all pointing breeds were invited. It was a great event - pointing, lunch and pictures. http://vizslacolorado.org/Vizsla_Club_o ... Event.html

We visited some family in Colorado for New Years and had the chance to go quail hunting while we were there. The dogs did great, especially considering this was new terrain for them and a new kind of quail (blues as opposed to the bobwhites they are used to). They had lots of hills they had to run up and down, tons of ground to cover, the altitude was significantly higher than what they're used to, and there was lots of cactus to contend with. But it was a nice cool day so they did great and I had fun carrying my camera instead of my gun for once.

Again trying to give Tillie water and her refusing to drink. "Too much hunting to do, Dad, no time to drink."
