Does any one know of any hunt tests in the Idaho area? My weim Scout is 4 and I have been hunting with her for a few years. She is really good at finding birds and is a retrieving fool. I thought it would be fun to try the hunt tests but I don't really know where to start.

Follow this link to the AKC Events page. Choose your state and in the competition type, choose Hunting Tests. It looks like you've missed all the ones that have been submitted so far in Idaho, but check back, more should pop up for September. Or if you don't mind driving to a neighboring state, check their events as well. Make sure it's a pointing breed club that's sponsoring the event - - the retriever clubs won't let you play. If you want to enter, simply click on the club name and either email or phone the contact person for details and their entry form. |

Thanks! I checked it out. I don't mind waiting until the fall. It is already too hot here! I have never even seen a hunt test so it would be nice to check one out before we give it a try so I'll have to keep an eye out for one near by. I really don't mind driving if that is what it takes.

| Shoot with your dog's pedigree you might want to give field trials a shot too. |

I have thought about it but she is not polished enough for that level of competition. She is very birdy though and has a lot of natural talent. She does point reliably and is a great retriever but I don't know if she runs big enough for the field trials. We are lucky to live where there are plenty of wild birds (sharptails, chukars, huns, and pheasants) and she is a great personal hunting dog! I am really glad there are people who are working hard to preserve these hunting instincts!

I agree!
I got my weim for a hunting and originally I just wanted to use her for a personal hunting companion. But after becoming a member of NAVHDA and learning about hunt tests and field trials...they sound like so much fun! I'm now seriously contemplating entering Danni for the NAVHDA testing.
I really enjoy working hard on something and seeing how the outcome has paid off. The unfortunate thing about that is I'm a bit of a perfectionist (My parents would say I strongly am...thanks to my harsh critiques on my artwork... ) so I'm learning how to undo that. |
