Check cords have numerous uses!
I've used mine for working with a recall, retrieving, working her with "whoa" command, working her in the field...etc...
It's nice because it allows you to maintain control over a situation.
Have you looked into your local NAVHDA chapter? |

| What exactly is a check cord? Just a long cord? Or is it more complex than that? |

Oh and another thing...
FYI, I personally prefer the orange check cords, they're much easier to spot in the field if you misplace them... |

Just a long cord with a hook for the collar. It's a training/control tool. |

| Where I work we have tons of wild pigeons and I would like to trap some. Are they easy to keep and take care of? Also what all do you do when letting them out for training. Just drop them in a field and walk it. Tie the birds out. Keep them caged up. Just a little help please. Also what is the saying "steady wing to shot"?? I hear it all of the time but don't know for sure what it is. Thanks Matt |

Pigeons are fairly easy to care for. Pigeons are used for dog training because they are cheap and reusable. (fly back to loft when released). Launchers are best for training (guaranteed flush). You can also card birds or dizzy and plant them. Always remember when training to keep a CC on the dog at all times. You must control the situation to make sure training comes out as planned. If you could post back on which method you are planning to use, I could go into more detail. It's alot of info to cover.
Steady to wing and shot basically means a dog will hold until the bird has flushed and shots fired, but not necessarily steady to fall. |

| Well I saw a "Better Kick Cage" in LCSupply and I thought it would work. I was just going to tether the bird. I am looking for the best way. I have never done this before and would like info on what would be the best. I have just read that the releasers will scare pups. Thanks, Matt |

Kick cages work ok once your dog is steady. They are very hard to use when training by yourself. Too hard to control dog and get the bird up. If you use the kick cage, I wouldn't use the tether. If something goes wrong it would be easy for the dog to catch the bird. If they think they can catch, there is no reason for them to point.
Launchers are best. Some dogs are intimidated of launchers at first, but quickly get used to them. Trick is first few times pop the birds from a distance, just close enough for the dog to get a good look. Nothing besides wild birds will steady a dog as quickly as a launcher. Dog moves, pop the bird. They learn movement=no bird anymore. |
