Hi from Los Angeles (Pic Heavy)

Postby MyBuddyArthur » Tue Feb 02, 2010 2:19 am

Hi everyone, my name is Arash and I'm from Los Angeles. I've been volunteering and fostering for a rescue (Karma Animal Rescue) for the past 2.5 years. In that time I've had 15-20 fosters.

Here's the current crew...

Kima (chocolate brown), Bijou (white with blue spots), Arthur (gray)

As you can see I love my pitties as much as most everyone here love's their weimies.

The reason I'm here is because my Knuckle Head Arthur....

He's my longest tenured foster. I've had him since Labor Day 2008 (with a one month furlough, when he was adopted and then returned). He was 7-9 months old when I first go him. I believe he's a APBT/Weim mix. With a lot of work and time he's become a great dog but we still have a couple issues to work on. He's extremely aware of any movements and noises, and gets anxious in new situations. He's also very leash reactive. He's not aggressive at all and has gotten along with all 15 or so fosters that have come through my house in the time he's been here, but walking past a strange dog sets him off. He had been chained up in an auto repair shop and a volunteer noticed that no one was taking care of him so she approached the shop and they gladly handed him over. The owner of the shop said Arthur belonged to a friend of his who went to jail and he had no one else to take care of it, but he did not want the dog. I hated Arthur for the first three months I had him. He was such a handful, had no manners, barked and whined constantly, couldn't be in a crate for two seconds and the list goes on. But now I can't imagine life without my buddy. He's technically a foster but he's not going anywhere. Anyways...like I said we've come a long way and still have some work to do. I've had, and will continue to have a lot of experience with bullies, but I don't know much at all about the other part of Arthur's complicated soul  Soooo..I'm here to learn anything and everything about Weimaraner. I know the breed basics as you would find on the standard breed description but I need to learn waaay more. They seem to be amazing dogs. Arthur's senses (sight, hearing, smelling) are much more dialed up then any of the pit bulls I've had. I'm hoping to learn how to channel those senses into something positive (smell work, agility, etc), which I think will also get rid of a lot of his anxieties.....sorry this was so wordy. The short version I'm starving for information!!!!!!

I also would like your opinions on his Weimyness :D I've only seen a few in person and haven't really had any experience with them. He sure looks part Weimaraner to me but you will be able to tell better than me.

Arash, firstly: bless your heart for what you do. Your house must be truly a home, with those friends.
Arthur sure looks like a Weim/pit bull mix. He has that unmistakable taupe color, and that look - albeit with the tiny pitbull eyes - of "Uh huh, what?"
Love your word soul. That's what Weims have!
This website is replete with people who have much information about the breed. Thanks for researching!

What a stunner! I can absolutely see some Weimy in him. And the rest of your crew are awesome!

That's quite the hunting dog mix, a terrier and a pointing dog all in one - it's a wonder he hasn't had an identity crisis

I'm not sure what your exercise schedule is with your dogs, but Arthur may benefit from longer and harder exertion. I find with my Weim the amount of time spent on a run or hike is almost as important as the intensity - I've given up walking him around the block, it just amps him up, doesn't calm him down! He needs to run and sniff and smell and track and just *be* a hunting dog, THEN when we get home he's relaxed and a real cuddle bug.

Anyways my suggestion is to evaluate the level of exercise he's getting, perhaps it might not be enough or the right intensity.

One other suggestion (already made) is to give him a job. Something to focus his mind on. There are all kinds of formal doggy activities you can do: agility classes, obedience, tracking/search & rescue but some of those things you can do on your own, without registering in formal classes.

At home Lincoln loves it when we lay a track down with a toy or hotdog or something and then tell him to "find it!". Get's his nose working!

That sure looks like a Weim heart smiling out of those eyes! The wisest and most true advice given on this site repeatedly is," A tired Weim is a good Weim." That isn't always easy to achieve, but it's nonetheless true. They do love jobs, too, so agility or obedience is a great way to go. So glad you and Arthur have joined us here!

Welcome from Texas! I can definitely see a lot of Weimaraner in him. It's funny because he looks like a pitbull in his face but then from the side view of his body, he definitely looks like a Weim.

Weimaraners are very intelligent dogs. It's true that a tired weim is a good weim. But what's also true is that mental stimulation is equally as important to them as physical exercise. Since Weimaraners are hunting dogs, they love to use their noses. Any activities you can get him in that require the use of his nose & his mind would be great. Even if it's just hiding a treat or a toy around the house or in the yard. Many Weims are also natural retrievers since they are required to do this out in the field. I suggest seeing if he likes to retrieve. And if he does, then make it more & more complicated once he catches on. Start by just tossing a toy for him to bring back to you. Then make it harder by requiring that he sit & wait while you toss the toy and he's not allowed to go get it until you give him the release word. I'm just saying, be creative and expect more out of him. I'm sure he's very intelligent and very capable of working on a more complicated level. So challenge him using his natural abilities.

You mentioned that he's very leash reactive. One command I've taught Milo is the "watch" command. Start at home with no distractions and teach him to look at you when you say "watch." Use treats or whatever it takes to get him to look at you. Then, when he has this down pat, you can use it in situations where you need to break his attention from something. Like on a leash when a dog walks by and he starts barking. Just say, "Arthur, watch" and he should look up at you. Then you can distract him by giving him another command. I use this a lot for Milo because I know that no matter what is going on, if I say watch, he's going to look up at me. It gives me those few seconds that I need to get his mind onto something else and off of whatever he was originally focused on.

You're at the right place to learn about Weims. Look over old posts and read about all the antics and you'll learn a lot. Welcome!

He looks like an APBT to me. I've seen quite a few that are this color.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and advice. My pups definitely get enough physical and mental exercise but I don't think Arthur is getting enough of a chance to use his senses (sight and smell are much more amped up than my other pups), and that's why I came here. Plus I love learning about all dogs so it's another breed to research.

I definitely agree he's an APBT mix. He's much longer and leggier than your typical APBT. He's also grown to look more and more like an APBT. When I frist got him at 7 months he was a goofy looking somebody :o) (The third picture is from when he was younger) There are definitely APBTs his same color and I'm not positive that he is a Weimy mix. The things I know are he's definitely a mix, his sense of smell and sight are much, much stronger and active than a normal APBT which leads me to believe he has some sort of hunting/tracking breed in him. My best educated guess based on everything I've just said is that he has Weimaraner in him. I could be wrong, but even if I am wrong, I'm glad I found you guys. Here's to some good knowledge sharing and a few jokes.

Welcome! Thank you for all your work with fostering and rescue. All the dogs are beautiful. Arthur does have very long legs... but other than the legs, he looks pure APBT. I hope they all find loving forever homes soon.

Welcome to the WA, he is just beautiful, your whole gang is, i just adore them. I had to look at the pictures several times, the first time I though to myself he is full blood APBT, but after looking at the pictures for the 3 and 4th time, I agree with you, he most definitely has some weim in him, not just the coloring, but also his body, his longer legs, and his eyes. Weims are all about the NOSE, do not neceseraly have to over work him, just keep his nose and mind busy and that should do the trick.
Thank you for all the rescue work you do.

Thank you for all you do!!! Your group is beautiful. Arthur does look weimish to me. It is his body shape that gives it away. And his eyes look sort of amber. He is beautiful, I'll say that!!! I had a foster weim, Link, that had a shorter snout and I thought he look like a pitty so there is no doubt in my mind that Arthur may have some weimy in him. His personality will tell you more about his breed than his looks. Weims aren't called velcro dogs for nothing. I haven't been in a room alone in almost 7 years; since we got our first weimy, Scout.

Welcome to you and Arthur and the rest of your gang from Pennsylvania!!!!!
