RegalGarve - sound as if you have your priorities right regarding your breed preferences
It is such a shame we don't really have a lot of meets anymore... although there is a few Irish setters around who are worked and there is a field trialling club...
My mum's wei came from Gunclip. She didn't quite work out for the breeder so she came to us at 5 months... interestingly enough my mum went there to adopt an adult male and left with a 5mo female pup!! She is 3 now and very sweet.
we will definitely all have to get together eventually!! |

Sounds great SparkyTansy!
I've never had a female Wei before, had your mum had Weis before?
My mum has an English Pointer-Archie at the mo. he's 4yrs and lost her Irish Setter 3 months ago, he was 12yrs. He had scoliosis of the spine-poor baby. The past 12 months has not been too good for the dogs in our family! We lost 5 between us. So, now it is time to start again.
Look forward to catching up with all the fur kids! |

Before my mum got Sorrel she had 4 weims in the past... all females...
I was lucky enough to grow up with 3 of them, Elly, Sparky and Tansy. We lost Elly early (9 months) to Immunodeficiency virus... Sparky we got a little while later through a breeder, and Tansy came along about a year later... We lost tansy at age 7 and sparky about a year later... mum didn't want another wei but I talked her into it We now have 5 dogs between us
I am really sorry to hear about your mum's Irish... will she be getting another? It is amazing that you discover that there are certain breeds you just cannot be without...
Funnily enough, at shows i sit with Pointer Breeders and friends that show their Irish Setters, plus a friend with a Wei. they are all such great breeds!
Thanks too, i love my English Setters and Ari of course... i'd never be without either breed. |

I'm sorry to hear about your dogs passing so close together! It makes it so much harder losing them I think when it happens one after the other like that. To lose one so young is awful. I have heard of a breeder here in WA having a lot of problems with Immunodeficiency problems and her litters. It turns out that Garve was from that breeder and he had a problem with his nose-auto immune disease.
Mums first Pointer was put down at 18 months as it turned out he had a brain tumour. She said she would never have another but alas, we talked her into it too!! Wicked aren't we!?! Mum is trying to get another Irish through Pet Rescue, there is one in NSW looking for a home, we are trying to find a cheaper way of getting him here-airline quoted $600!! He's about 9 years old and was abandoned. Time to sell a kidney on ebay!!hehe |

I tried to see pics of your beautiful Zane, but the album was empty. Do you have more pics? |

HI
I did a search on auto immune disease and your post came up. I have a 5 year old weim who about 2.5 years ago started to lose the pigment in her nose. It then started to blister and at first I though she had sun burn. When I took her to the vet they did a biopsy and said she had an auto immune disease and gave her a shot of steroids. this didnt seem to help much and over the years I have tried various natural ointments to put on her nose but she licks it all off. Does anyone know of anything that can help??? |

I sent you a msg about the paw paw ointment, although you may have already tried that!
I just found that keeping him out of the sun helped, the pigment never came back, but it stopped the blistering etc. It always looked a little worse in the summer, but keeping him away from the sun and flies helped lots. He was in such a bad way when we first got him that it constantly oozed-it was horrible. I thought it was sun burn too at first.
I hope that helps a bit.
Great to meet you all!! |
