I need help on a few things....our pup is pretty well trained he's been sitting, giving paw, staying and fully potty trained for a long time. There are a few things that drive us nuts
1.) We would love to leave him home out of the cage but we did it once for 30 min and I waited outside where he couldn't see me and he cried and threw himself around the house the whole time. Will he ever be able to be alone for long, it's like 3 1/2 hrs in the cage is all he's willing to do or he goes nuts
2.) In the last month he's been getting testy with what he is and isn't alloweed to do. Today he wripped the bed in his cage into shreds just b/c.
Is that normal for him to start being defient all the sudden?
3.) The jumping and and excitement when people are around is crazy, we constantly yell at him but he doesn't seem to get it
Overall he's been great...we tought him in 10 minutes this week to lay down on the floor instead of the couch and he hasn't been on the couch yet, which is great, but he's driving us nuts with the other things |

Sounds like your typical 7 month old weim. Mine is eight months. Smart as can be and as stubborn as H@@@. It sounds like you are doing a good job with his training. Make sure he is getting lots of exercise. Don't yell it makes them more excited. When he jumps . try to make him sit instead. I think no I know, a lot of them tear up their beds. It's probobly not personal. Remember, he has an adolesent Psyche in an adult body. Get in obedience and exercise, exercise exercise. Hope he starts doing better soon.

Yep - LOTS of exercise.
Django is the model citizen when he has that outlet for his energy - on the odd day (and trust me, they are few and far between) where he only gets one walk, he is a HOLY terror! |

I agree that it sounds like a typical 7 month old puppy! I read in a book about puppy training that between 6 -9 months is when puppies are in their "teenage years" and this is when they will test their limits the most. I definitely found that this was true of Gracie. Now, as a 10 month old, she no longer tests the limits as much and is so much more obedient! Keep doing what you're doing and be patient! |

Excercise helps but isn't a cureall, he still needs to be trained on how to remain calm and what is expected of him as far as greeting rituatals. The excitement when people come over is normal. Try to redirect behavior or have him sit as suggested. Make sure your guests do not reinforce his behavior - this is probably the hardest part!!
As for testing you at 7 months, this is totally normal, he is an adolescent. This is where all your training you've done so far is going to come in really handy!
The crate stuff, I'll refer you to other posts on the subject. |
