I'm new to this. I'm so glad I found a place where I can find out info. I got a 1 year old weim from a family that could no longer take care of him. I didn't know much about this breed but I did not want them to take him to the pound so we took him in. I've been looking at the internet and it says that weims require alot of excerise. I've been taking him on 2 to 3 walks a day. Sometimes we jog. I'm trying to teach him how to play fetch. Is this enough exercise or do I need to take him on more walks/runs? He is really good. Right now he tends to nip and jump on us and the kids, when he gets real excited. He is now starting to bark at people. He stops after I tell him thank you and then I tell him enough. Also, does anyone happen to know if martingale collars are pretty good for weims? Thanks so much |

Hello! Awesome for taking in a dog!
The amount of exercise depends on the dog. They'll let you know when they aren't getting enough!

Welcome and kudos to you for giving Murphy a home!
I too think it depends on the dog, when our Gunther doesn't get enough, he can't settle and starts to look for things to chew on.
I have quite a few collars, but a couple of my favorites are the Lupine martingale collars, lifetime guarantee and they don't slip off their head. |

What an you are!
I'm a firm believer in having the kids involved in training and daily care (feeding, brushing, etc). What I found to work best for jumping is to ignore them when they behave this way. If you need to continuously turn in circles so your back is to them, so be it. You'll notice a difference within a few days of doing this, IMO.
I think collars differ from dog to dog. Go with what works best for you and your dog.
Good luck and congratulations! |

I use a martingale on Greta occassionally. I just got her a new break away one that she uses when she is in the yard. On walks I had to resort to the prong, several months ago on a walk with her martingale and her brother, Bo, they managed to tear my rotator cuff and some ligaments in my spine. She doesn't pull at all on the prong, and as much as I was an advocate against it, I know realize it's use, and understand that I am not hurting her. Welcome to the group and good luck! Post lots of pics! |
