Hi there..we just adopted a 5 yo female..she'll be 6 in November. We just got her Saturday...her family is moving across the US and is unable to take her with them. I do have a few questions if you all don't mind.
Sadie is currently in heat and just started on Thursday..am I correct in understanding we need to wait 3 months after she's done to get her spayed?
Also...it may be because she misses her family but she hasn't eaten much (except for the Cat's food)..she pretty much ignores her dish. Any suggestions?
Also...with her other family she was kept crated at night in the garage and she stayed outside in the backyard all day year round...we want her to be indoors as well as use the backyard...so far if she doesn't have to go potty she's in the house...which we don't mind at all..she just doesn't want to stay outside unless someone is out there playing with her. The first night in the crate did NOT go over well at all...my husband went out and stayed with her and she was able to settle down but neither of us are really comfortable keeping her crated in the garage....so...last night she slept on the couch...Thanks again..I'm really glad I stumbled across this forum. |

Welcome!...and thank you for rescuing.
Please keep in mind that her WHOLE life has been turned upside down and while humans KNOW that it is for the better, dogs don't right away, so be patient.
As far as food, to prevent her from getting finicky, put her food out 2x/day for no more than 15 min.. If she doesn't eat, take it up. This will not make her starve, it will teach her a schedule. If she's picky about food, try a little pinch of grated cheese on top for a strong enticing smell or you could grate a bit of Natural Balance's dog food roll over it...
I'm not sure how long you'll need to wait to spay her after her heat, but keep a close eye on her during.
When you have a chance, please post pictures... we LOVE pix on W.A. |

If you are OK with Sadie being in the house and sleeping on the couch, I am certain she won't mind at all.
Our boys are always outside during the day but in Sadie's condition, inaccessible would be best unless you want puppies.
Sadie is probably just upset from the change in her life. Time and love will cure that.
As for eating, Udo is the first weim I have had that is an eager eater. With Heidi and Schatzie I had to temp their pallets with additives like plain yogurt, buttermilk and the favorite cottage cheese. Minute rice cooked with a beef or chicken bouillon cube also worked well. Any of these added to what her previous owners were feeding would be a good start.
My boys like pears, apples and watermelon. |

| Thank you so much..Sadie is very loving and I can tell she is starting to relax a bit. Her former owner told us she loves to swim...We live within walking distance to a lake so I took her there this morning and she had a great swim..she actually got me nervous because she went out quite far and was quite reluctant to come back...it looked like she was having a great time though. I just can't wait until she is spayed..then we can relax a bit more with her. I did take up her food (thank you for the advice) so when I feed her later I will try to add something to it to make it more appetizing for her. She is such a sweet heart ..I did add some photos to the Album section of this site. Thank you so much!! |

Awww, she's so pretty. It will be much easier for you once she is spayed. I would be a nervous wreck with a dog in heat |

There is a reason we call them velcro dogs!
Do you have a dog door? She might be more likely to spend time outside if she knows she can come in any time.
Good luck and thanks for rescuing her! |

| Welcome from East Texas. She is beautiful. I spoke with my Vet and he said that he would spay two weeks after she went out of heat, but he said a lot of vets will spay any time so you would need to check with yours. |

Welcome, you got a beautiful lady there. I agree, it is just going to take her time to get used to everything. |

We don't have a doggie door yet but we are planning on adding an extension to our slider door...I would leave it open so she can come and go but she has to have pants on since she is in heat or she'll drip blood on the floor...if I leave her pants on and the door open then she will go out and go potty with her pants on. So for now it's pants on, pants off....LOL.
...and she still won't eat her food....I know she loves apples so I chopped some up and put it over her food...she didn't eat it....she picked a few apples out and then left it.....I even poured our steak dinner drippings over her food and she just sniffed it and walked away. I know she'll eat eventually but we have 2 huge bags of dog food from her previous owner.....my cat seems to enjoy it. |

Tonight I mixed her food with 2 spoonfuls of nonfat Yogurt and she devoured it! Thanks for the suggestions! |
