Hi!
My name is Tina. My husband and 6 year old son, along with our 2 year old long-haired chihuahua, Lady have adopted a Weim.
Her name is Teal. Her previous owner is my nephew. His mom and dad and their family of dogs, didn't take to Teal.
I adopted her on August 2. And she was 7 months old at the time.
It's been a rocky road, but I'm trying to learn and read everything to make it all better. I want her to be happy.
I have so many questions I don't know where to start. So here goes!
1. Can a weim ever sleep in a dog bed on the floor? It just seems like she has to get in my bed. I don't mind, but my husband is very anti-Teal right now. So, I end up crating her at night. But then I have to crate her during the day, too. Luckily, I'm self-employed so it's not for long. I'm also going to look at a local doggy day care for her.
2. Fun and easy (besides fetch and walking) things I can do with Teal for fun and exercise
3. Also looking for local Louisiana weimaraner owners.
4. Anything else a newbie like me should know.
Thanks so much!
Tina

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you are dedicated to making things work out with Teal
Weims can learn to sleep on their own beds but you have to be very consistent and that is not always easy since they can be pretty stubborn.
Scout is allowed to sleep on my bed but she prefers to sleep in her crate. Crating Teal at night is fine especially if you are able to find a doggy day care for her during the day. |

| Welcome from East Texas. I love her name. You can play hide and seek with Teal, put peanut butter in her Kong and hide it. We tell our boys to find the bird and they know we are playing hide and seek. We have three different color Kong and we will say find the red Kong if they bring us the wrong one we will tell them no and they will go back and find the right one. It is a fun game and they learn there colors well red, black, and blue anyway. |

Thanks for your responses Stacie & Sheri!!
I know I will get lots of ideas from this site.
I can't take credit for the name. My nephew had her since she was a pup and he intended on training her to be a hunting dog for ducks (ie "teal" ducks). I'm not a hunter, yet. But I'm thinking about training her to hunt doves.
But I'm just trying to make it through each day. She's a sweetie pie, but a handful. And some days I am SOOO intimidated by her size. But I've trained her to do some basic obedience commands.
So, keep the good ideas, helpful hints, and support coming!
Tina
P.S. - Check out her "announcement" I created!

Welcome to the boards, you will pick up so much useful information and pointers here.
As far as getting them to sleep on their own beds, pure persistence on your part will help you succeed. Shadow thought she had a God given right to be on our bed, particularly when my husband was away, until she got rudely shunted off by him one night and landed hard on the tile. She still tries it on, sneaking onto the bed a paw at a time when we're asleep but these days a stern no or down does the job and she quite happily curls up on her own bed. She seems to prefer it when her bed is in the lounge during the day, particularly when we have afternoon thunderstorms and she curls up into a tight little ball like she's cold. Unlikely given it's mostly in the 80s here year round but that's how she looks. |

she's a QT!!!
And I love love love your announcment... I sent some around when we got both Blue n June. Did you design them yourself?
You will lvoe it here and get tons of great advice.
We gate our 2 out at night otherwise we'd have 2 full-grown weimies in bed hogging the pillows! They are content on the sofa in the living room til sun-up
For activity, we use kongs and obediance training (Chris does doggie-yoga/relaxation), walks and the dog park on ocassion. When the weather's crummy, we play "hide the treats" in the house.
Good Luck and thank you for "rescueing" Teal! |

Yes, I did design the announcement myself. I'm a designer and have been venturing out into personalized stationery. |

| Did you try taking her swimming? I have friends with ponds and we live near rivers. My friends dogs encourage my young weim to start swimming and fetch tennis balls and sticks from the water or just play with each other. Thank goodness their short hair dries quickly. |
