| Hello I have had my baby boy for 3 weeks now, he was a rescue and is currently 9 months old. So far he has been an angel I mean sit stay lay down go to your bed the works. But one thing that we really need to work on is come. which i find really important because i want to take him off his leash badly so he can play with other dogs because he's very gentle but he won't respond to me unless he knows i can control such as inside. but as soon as we step foot outside he says bi dad see ya in a bit. so any training tips for come would be much appreciated. Also does anyone know any good hunting schools around the dc area and prices thanks so much |

Ruby is like this as well. We attach a really long leash (horse lunging lead) when she's outside running around - that way when she either goes somewhere she's not meant to or will not respond to our recall we step on the lead and say "come" giving it a bit of a tug (or in some cases reel her in) prompting her to come. We're still using treats as reward so she gets a treat once she's back and we give her a good pat.
We are working on recall with distractions amongst other things.
There are some great posts on recall on this site. |

There's the problem...he's 9 months old! LOL--they go through a major crazy period where they forget everything you've ever taught them!
Put him on a checkcord, work with distractions and in different places. He's probably absorbing more than you think. When he stops what he's doing every time and comes to you (treats help), try it off leash. Maybe even attach a short pull-tab (about 5-6") to his collar so he still has that feeling of something attached.
Bob Seelye @ http://www.cliffsidebirddogs.com, a vizsla guy but awesome and gentle with young dogs. There are quite a few others who don't advertise much, but be ready for sticker shock.

or you can just get yourself a bit of rope to attach to their collar.
We've had our lunging lead for years, I can't remember where we got it from. Maybe an equestrian shop. You could try ebay? |

"Come" is something that both my dogs are awesome at! They are 7 and 10 months old. I started with both of them very young and at random times (often) throughout the day would call them by saying "Duke come" or "Gracie come" whether they were in the back yard or in the house and when they did I would reward them with a treat. Then as they mastered it I would sometimes reward with a treat and sometimes reward with a pet and a "good dog". And now they can be busy as bees running in the yard, chasing something, or off leash on a walk and all I have to do is give the command and they immediately stop and come - especially my 10 month old.
It seems that alot of people have had difficulty training their Weims to do various things....I've had many dog breeds throughout my life and honestly to me Weims (or at least mine) are extremely intelligent and easy to teach. And as mine get older they just get better and better. Hyper yes, high energy yes, but they do mind when I tell them to. I think it just takes consistency and patience. Just do the training over and over and over and they will get it quite quickly. |
