TOPIC: Dumb Question, Pumpkin

Dumb Question, Pumpkin 27 Aug 2012 18:09 #283587

I've always seen others using pumpkin to help quell the stomachs of our little grey friends, question is are you using canned pumpkin? All I can find is the canned pumpkin pie mix but that has sugar and such in it already so is there another version of just plain ole pumpkin? Or do i need to find myself a ghourd and mix it up.

There is pure pumpkin in a can. Libby makes it and there is another brand available here, but I can't remember it now. The only ingredient, well, pumpkin.

Most groceries have the pumpkin that is just that...pumpkin, nothing else added. If they have a heath food section you will find the 'just pumpkin' there as well. The other option is just buying a sweet potato and poking it with a fork 2-3 times and microwaving until soft...5-8 minutes. No need to peel it, it will get soft quicker than a potato. Just give two or three scoops, tablespoons, when cooled.
Too much will make runny...just a little will firm it up. Toss it in the fridge and give a bit the next day...

My dog took off with our Halloween pumpkin last year and ate half of it raw. So parents of new puppies might want to watch out for that. He ate it like an apple. Then thought I was playing chase when I tried to get it back. His tummy got very upset from eating to much.

The sad thing is I can picture my Weim doing the same. He even eats the tops of carrots when I am cutting them off, if I miss the trash can and they hit the floor he has it gone before I can blink. I have found eggshells in is poop too, so we had to get a baby/toddler lock for the cabinet where the trash is since he was obviously opening the cabinet door. I do wonder why their genius only comes out when food is involved.

But I just switched Blue to salmon/sweet potato grain free food and his poop is completely normal now, before it was really runny so maybe it has to do with vitamin A???

Our pumpkin froze last year and then started to thaw in a mush...pups when after it but i caught them. A tablespoon twice a day for a few days will firm up the runs. More than that it creates the opposite.

Check a different grocery, a large chain. Usually you will find a few different brands together. When we had pumpkin trouble a few years ago due to crop failure i suggested canned yams...similar fiber.
Just make sure no added sugars.

Baxter had tummy troubles last week, but I can't get him to eat pumpkin, or yogurt. He didn't have much of an appetite, so mixing it in his food wasn't helping either. Just thought I'd throw out my trick to get him to eat it.

I bought one of those ice trays that make the mini cubes, smeared the pumpkin in it, after it froze I stored them in a ziplock baggie in the freezer.

Baxter will eat almost anything if it's frozen, so he thinks he's getting a treat and I've been giving him a couple of them everyday. Each "tasty cube" is about 1/2 a teaspoon.

Or, if your husband does the grocery list and comes back with those itty-bitty zip-locks that hold one pretzel nugget instead of small quarts, , you could freeze in that. My pups love anything frozen...banana, cantaloupe, string beans...

(what do people put in such a tiny zip-lock?)
