TOPIC: Tips For a First Time Spay?

Tips For a First Time Spay? 07 Aug 2012 12:51 #282429

Sophie goes in tomorrow morning to get fixed. I'm a little nervous; I've had many dogs fixed in the past, but they were all boys. Sophie is my first girl. I'm assuming the procedure is a little more intensive for girls. I peppered the vet with all kinds of questions, but now I think I need some reassurance. They'll keep her for the first two days and depending on her reaction, she'll come home with a cone and some pain meds. (The vet actually said I didn't have to buy extra pain meds, but who wouldn't?? Shouldn't that hurt?? Just in case, I opted to have that charge tacked on. Tell me if I'm just being overbearing.) Right now she goes to a dog daycare every weekday while I'm at work. I've already spoke to the daycare and made arrangements for them to keep her separated from the other puppies when she returns. Is there anything else I should be doing? Is there a proper way to pick her up (for car rides and sleeping in the bed)? Or should she not be sleeping in the bed at all while she heals? Anyone with a girl Weim who's been through this have any suggestions/tips/words of encouragement? I've been getting more nervous about this by the day (Sophie is like my little girl now) and it kinda saddens me that she wags her tail all happy-like and has NO idea what I'm about to do to her

That's the link to the thread of Maus getting spayed two weeks ago. She was out for the count after the procedure and I was worried about her not eating, well I was wrong the next evening she at like mad and didn't even need pain meds at all. The members have left some good advice in that thread. Good luck and don't fret!
Don't mind the locks on the cabinets, we have a Maus problem.

I was an absolute wreck of an emotional human being!
Found my announcement,

I like that we dropped her off in the morning and picked her up that evening.
I love, love, the soft collar. It is like an inner tube that you blow up. Got it at the local pet store.
My vet prefers it. She wore it 24/7 for two weeks. Very stressful time. She healed quickly.
So i understand your concern. All will be fine.

The soft collar is a great suggestion. And don't be afraid to keep her calm and quiet with Acepromazine. There is a time and place for "Ace" and this is one of them. They need it for their own good so they can heal. And they are really cuddly when they are on it so enjoy all the cuddles!

Yeah, I think the sedative is a better add on expense than the pain killers. Terra was back to her normal self the morning after the procedure. Sedating her was the only thing that calmed her down enough so she could get some rest.

As far as getting her in and out of the car, I was told not to pick her up, but rather pick up her front feet and put them on the seat and then boost her back legs. Getting her out? As soon as my husband opened the door she jumped out. I have no advice there.

Terra was my first spay, too. I was worried, worried, worried. She did great and I am sure Sophie will be fine, too.

Thanks guys. I'll ask the vet about that "ace" thing. I'm assuming it's from vets only? I dropped her off this morning before work and ended up fretting over her the whole drive to my office. I'm still crazy worried. I'm calling the vet as soon as I leave here to check in on her. I won't be able to pick her up till Friday and I really didn't think I'd be worrying this much over a dog... Somewhere down the line I think she stopped being "just a dog," though. And I can't help but feel a little guilty over taking away her lady bits. She might've made a good mom, you know?

Why not until Friday? I dropped Terra off at 9:30 and she was home by 6:15 that night.

That would be so stressful for me.

Let us know how she is doing.

My vet has a policy of keeping animals overnight for two nights after surgery to make sure they don't have any complications. I called yesterday to check on Sophie's status and was told she made it through fine and was just hanging out in her kennel watching everyone. It made me feel a little better, I was real anxious thinking about her surgery, but sleeping alone last night was really weird. I used to get irritated with the extreme heat she'd put off while crammed into my back, but it was so cold last night!! I'm picking her up tomorrow, though. I can't wait!!

Gracie got spayed 2 weeks ago as well, and she had to stay overnight, although it was only one night. After reading that everyone else got to pick up their puppy that day, I was so jealous, but now looking back I'm glad she stayed there because I think it made her recovery so much easier-- She came home Saturday morning, and we spent the weekend chilling on the couch and hanging out at home-- she never had to wear a cone and never acted like she was in any pain or discomfort. Our vet said that if she started to lick her wounds, to put an old t-shirt on her so she wouldnt be able to get to them. We never had to do that. She doesn't sleep in our bed so the jumping on the high bed wasn't a problem. She had a gastropexy too and that wound actually has taken longer to heal-- the spay wound is completely healed and she acts as if nothing happened- she didn't even mind going back to the vet this week!

I'm so glad she did well. I bet you can't wait to have her home.

Now, if my vet was willing to keep her for the entire 2 week recovery I may have been on board.

Well, I picked Sophie up yesterday. Here I was expecting for them to bring out this meek slow moving girl and instead she comes tearing through the office so fast she's sliding around on the tile floor. She's jumping and running around and poking her nose into everything at her eye level. The vet told me he had to make her incision longer than usual because he had a hard time locating her uterus. He said when he finally found it, it was smaller than a cat's. I brought her home and she immediately began chasing the cat. She hasn't paid her stitches any attention and was able to jump on and off my bed on her own. I was given one dose of painkiller that I'll give her later today and some acepromazine that I haven't used it, but will probably have to soon because she's been training for a decathlon since I brought her home.

Sooie is a cutie!! I'm taking Sophie to the vet today to see if she can get her stitches out. She's been handling this like a champ. God bless acepromazine; it was the only thing that calmed her down last weekend. She's been jumping and playing around as if she didn't have a row of stitches on her belly and the worst part about her recovery has been not letting her run around or play at the dog park.

It's amazing how quickly they *think* they are recovered, huh? The Ace can be a livesaver, really. I was afraid to use it but it saved my sanity.

Sooie will do fine! Hope her procedure goes smoothly.
