So my baby is growing up and it’s now time to lose the baby teeth and get some big girl teeth…..

But I am curious to know what you guys’ experiences are with teething and especially the canines (if that’s the correct name for them?)….

Zara’s teeth get a little pink at the base of the tooth and then almost purple!!! Is this normal? She is also a little down and almost sad? Any solutions? Luckily she still has a very good appetite and no problem playing or anything, but during the day I notice her just sitting and looking sad…

Hmmm. I have no idea what was going on inside Terra's mouth while she was teething, but she didn't act any differently while her teeth were falling out (or coming in). She did have both sets of canines for a while. That was intersting.

Maybe she is sore, especially if her gums are discolored. Maybe try a frozen washcloth for her to chew on. I would also consider calling the vet just to see what they say about the gum thing.

It is probably the blood at the base below and around the tooth/teeth...ready to come out as the adult teeth come in? Try old t-shirt strips, knotted, wet, and then frozen. It will feel good to chew on and numb the area. Like a teething ring for pups. They can be rinsed and re-frozen.

I never heard of the frozen shirt thing! Good idea. I got the "chilly bone" fromt he pet store. Its a fabric bone that you soak up water and freeze it. Same concept in the fact that ir acts as a frozen teething ring.

As for the being sad part and almost purple gums, I'm not sure what this is. Jaeger never seemed to notice when he lost a tooth. We would be playing and then all of a sudden his mouth would be bloody. I'd look in and sure enough, there was an empty socket. Maybe she is just having a harder time than most? Maybe ask the vet?

There is also a thing called 'retained baby teeth' where the adult ones come in and a few baby teeth remain in the same socket but pushed aside. Billie had one that we watched. It was slightly loose but stuck in the same socket...it fell out eventually but if it did not it would need to be removed by the vet. Not usually weims but some breeds have a horrible time with it.

We are going through this at the moment! two teeth in one day! Our friend suggest freezing rope toys and it has worked wonders! We noticed Portia was getting more rambunctious than normal and just seemed anxious. I also bought her two huge beef bones that keep her pretty satisfied. chew chew chew...get them out!
