TOPIC: Excessive Itching and Bumps Appearing

Excessive Itching and Bumps Appearing 15 Nov 2011 12:13 #268535

My wife just text me a couple of pictures of Duke and stated he had been excessively itching his ears/head this morning and bumps then started to appear which also seem to be spreading down his neck to his belly.

Curious if anyone else has seen something like this.

We are going to keep a close eye on him and if it doesn't go down take him to the vet tomorrow.

the pictures do work but not sure what it is. could it be hives? maybe check his throat and make sure it isn't being affected or swollen.

OMG, wow, that looks horrible. I would like to say that looks like an allergic reaction to something. You can give a dog Benadryl, ONLY Benadryl plain, no additives of any sort. 25mg for every 25lbs. When my Weim was thought to have allergy problems, he weighed 75lbs then and I gave him 3 25mg tabs twice a day. That dog needs some help. Also, if it isn't an allergic reaction, which that's what it looks like, Benadryl will not hurt him. Might make him sleepy or the opposite for a while, but it won't hurt to try it.
Sorry, but my dog thinks you're an asshole and I believe him..

Thanks for the heads up, we did end up giving him benadryl but don't know if there has been any results. This was given to him 2 HRS ago. Now my wife is at work and Dukers has been left to tend to himself. Hopefully he sleeps the rest of the afternoon away.

The only thing that we know he got into last night was my daughters(14 months old) oatmeal cereal nothing else out of the ordinary.

Wish I would of thought to tell her to look in his mouth :(

I'm not sure if dogs are the same as far as allergic reactions to as compared to humans, but my son has the most severe allergies you could imagine and when he has a reaction, he breaks out in hives and can't breathe. If I were you, I would have someone check on your dog. Allergies are pretty serious and for your dog to have reacted that badly, I'd definitely keep a close eye on him. Again, dogs vs humans, but I have to carry around an epi-pen for my son at all times and if he had a reaction enough to welt up, I wouldn't leave him alone.

I agree with hives. If the benadryl doesn't clear them up I would head to the vet where they can give iv benadryl or epinephrin. We've had hives more times than I choose to count.

Thanks for the responses.

When I got home that afternoon, he was back to his energetic self. Ready to play some hide and seek for his red ball.

Great to see.
