| Hi everyone, i finally uploaded a picture of my Dante. I love love love (did i say love) my dog, he is the first i have purchased on my own. Recently just turned 1! Its exciting. I must say though he is a bit of a handful sometimes. I see alot of pictures around of beautiful weims that you all have, how in the heck do you get them to even relax to the point of sleeping! I tell ya, 8 am hes up and running all day till he goes to bed. I want to transition him to sleeping on the bed i bought him in my room but hes, i know people have this problem too, constantly by my side. I get up he gets up, i sit he brings his toy over and bam! in my lap. Im on the floor he lays on my leg and licks my feet. I took him to training mind you, no offence to the trainer or tactics but clicker training is useless with this nut. He eats grass, leaves and chews on sticks, likes his rope toys but no other toys because its too hard to destory them. He still mows its not nipping because theres no bite, but he will places his mouth on me when playing. Mind you i will do whatever it takes with him, i love him to much to bring the thought of ever giving him away or anything like that, i just need to know what can i do to get him to be more independant? Hes not allowed on furniture, he wont go on my bed ( i have a small bed right now) he wont stay put when im walking even 2 feet from him, for that matter stepping over him. Anyone else have this problem? If so has anyone figured out what to do to make there dog more independant? |

| We had a brown weim back about 15 years back, my dad brought him up from a pup and hand trained him ie. hand signas mainly as commands. He was top of the class and very loyal. I tried to get dante into a training k9 class thats down the road, has this worked for anyone else. I dont want him to be a guard dog or anything like that BUT he wont stick with training until i give him "the look". i could tell hiim to sit and he just looks at me, even after all the training i went through for the past 9 months! Anyone else had hand signal training with their weim? |

There is no such thing as a brown Weim.
As to the training issues . . . I suspect he either doesn't respect you (enough) as an authority figure, or he's learned that there are no consequences to disobeying.
I suggest going right back to the basics, trying NILIF, and going from there. |

I'm having trouble seeing what behaviour issues it is your having with him.. aside from the training issues in your second post. What you describe is a perfect description of the characteristics of a weim.
They are dependant, they will follow you everywhere. I can't pee on my own anymore unless I have a little grey nose poking her way through the door wanting to know where I am. I can't make a coffee unless I have a pair of grey eyes watching my every move. They are a loyal companion. I love that, and you should too!
Ruby still puts her mouth on us when playing, no biting, just mouth on us. Watch any dog playing and you'll see that's how they roll. They play bite. I personally don't find it an issue.
Our girl sleeps because she is exercised plenty. She gets almost an hour walk every day where she has almost half of that spent off lead running and sniffing etc. How much are you exercising him? He might be bored.
We use hand signals. They key is consistency and repetition.
Weimaraner's are stubborn as heck and sounds like you've got just that. Don't give up just because he doesn't do it in a few sessions. Get some good treats, take about 5-10 minutes per session (or whatever you can get in before the mind starts wandering) and try about 2 -3 sessions a day or more. That and what youhavenoidea said - NILIF - google that if you aren't sure, or use the search on this forum and you'll find some great posts from other people.
Good luck..
PS. I second that there is no such thing as a brown weim.. LOL |

Constant, consistent work with your dog is the key to getting the behavior you want. If you didn't want a shadow in the shape of a large furry thing, you might have wanted a different breed. This is the nature of the beast, and it was one of the many reasons I wanted Hannah.
They are highly trainable, wanting to please their owners, you just need to put in the time and work with it. Hannah was potty trained in a week, will sit, stay, wait, come. (worked on that one hard when we were leaving in the car. Nothing worse that a tank plowing you over while you are trying to get the car door open. I don't even have to give the command anymore, she just gets to the door, sits and waits while I get the doors unlocked and open) She rolls over, plays dead, speaks, sings, does high five, plays fetch, hunts squirrels all the time, but luckly for me she has not caught one yet. Her recall is good probably 95% of the time. I am hoping that the 5% is still due to her being a pup and all of the lovely smells out there she has yet to experience. We also use hand signals for most of the commands.
It requires work. Even after you have something down, they can still mix it up in their excitement. Don't reward until you are getting the behavior that you want. I agree here...consistency and repetition go a long, long way. Your work will pay off though!
I triple the no brown weim thing! |

| He was mix breed hence the brown part. His parents had been bred with another breed down the line, i know there is no such thing as a brown pure bred weim, never the less its not impossible to have a brown mix bred weim. There is no such thing as a never, impossible, that doesnt happen or exist. Even the vet took a profile and he had mainly weim in him. I find it hilarious when people think that it could never happen even when he was a mix and not "standard weim" never the less he was still very much part weim. |

Exactly! If you just specify weim-mix, or part-weim then it's clear for everyone! LOL
You didn't say how much exercise he gets and how intense it is (walks around the neighborhood generally don't cut it for these guys). If he gets a chance to run hard, say in the afternoon, and then a bit of playing, and then some obedience training (keep it short and sweet) chances are, he'll be calmer and more pleasant to have in the house by the evening. It's a big time investment (can't just put him in the backyard and expect him to tire himself out!) but it's worth it!
A tired Weim is a happy weim!
Also, as far as sleeping on a bed in your room...I wouldn't count on it...some weim owners can do this, but I know I can't. If we leave Lincoln out of his crate this is what happens:
On the bed...off the bed...found a bone...back on the bed...chew the bone...this bone sucks...need a new bone...off the bed...in the crate to find a new bone...on the bed...on my face...licking my face...c'mon lets play...oooh a kitty!...off the bed....sniff, sniff, sniff...on the bed...what?! are you still sleeping???
But if he's in his crate, locked up tight, he sleeps soundly!!
LOL, gotta love these weims!! |

Perfect example but instead of kitty in my case it's his older sister our Chihuahua that he's gotta sniff

My three do almost the same thing, the only difference in mine is the crate thing, one of my boys, Sam goes absolutely crazy in his crate. They will eventually settle down and go to sleep after about an hour so I let them sleep with me I just started going to bed earlier. I have learned one thing you must cut off the lights or they will never settle down. So now there is no reading in bed. |

Wilson sleeps great. Lots of exercise makes for a happy and tired weim. Sooo much easier to train and deal with (and love) a well behaved tired weim....even if I do wake up with dog butt on my pillow.
Why can't he sleep with his face touching me???? Why do I end up with the butt???? |

that is the funniest thing i have read all day!!
Hooch sleeps in his crate, and wakes me up.. but when i sleep with him on the couch, he sleeps right through..
in the morning when i need a post work nap.. i get about 2 hours of snuggle nap on the couch, and then it is exactly as you described.. hilarious!!!
Hey ladyDG, did you really post "for the love of crackers".. |

| Yours sleeps until 8am! Wow! My baby is up by 5:30-6. Sometimes after going potty I can get him to chill a little more while I "rest". He is still a puppy though. |

Does anyone have the problem of the dog eating rocks?? I heard some dogs do that, but stop after a while. Ranger just won't!! He's like on the hunt, to get to the rock before I can. I know he's still young, but I just don't won't him to get into some trouble (healthwise) because of his "hobby"! Plus sometimes it's all he does when we go for a walk. I just come home frustrated then.
He is sleeping in his crate all night. He will cry at about 6.30 that he has to go, then it's back to sleep until about 8 am.
Another question I have, when is going to sleep (usually in the evening but also sometimes during the day) he is shaking! Until he falls asleep, then it stops. Does anyone know if that is normal by puppies?? It doesn't seem that anything bothers him, he is just shaking. I would be calmer if I knew it's normal. |
