bathtime?

Postby LIZZIE » Thu Jul 08, 2010 6:11 pm

HI
I am new here and a new owner of a Weimador.
Lizzie is a 16 month old Weimador and has never had a bath.
Do I need to bath her? What do I bath her with?

We did have a boxer and Lizzie is SO MUCH different than a boxer so any help, suggestions, guidance would be appreciated.

She is so loving and playful... very talkative and the best cuddler :)

Thank you!!!

Lizzie is most definitely ready for a bath!!! Make sure to buy her an Oatmeal Shampoo so that her skin won't dry out! It's very moisturizing and leaves them smelling so good and natural! Dog owners have their own judgments/opinions about how often to bath dogs but go with what you feel is best for Lizzie....

I bathe Layla once every 2 weeks if not once a week because she swims in the river and lake, plays with dogs on a regular basis, plays in the mud puddles (when it rains) and after all that she just STINKS!!!! She sleeps with us so I make sure she's clean enough to do so! :P

Ziggie loves baths. We use an oatmeal shampoo that we got at the pet store. Nothing expensive or fancy. During the warm months he usually gets a bath weekly. More often if he rolls in poop, mud, dead animal, gets soaked in doggie slobber at daycare, or just stinks in general. During the winter we tend to bathe him less because he gets dry skin and we keep our house pretty chilly (he tends to be a cold dog).

I don't know that a dog needs a bath per se, it probably has more to do with you being able to stand living with a stinky dog. :) If you do decide to give her a bath, I would use a mild shampoo and warm water. A lot of grooming places and even some car washes that I've seen recently have self-bathing stations with very large raised tubs and sprayers.

Blu also gets bathed every couple of weeks, or more often, depending on the weeks activities. We also used an oatmeal shampoo.
However, he does get a foot wash a few times a week. His feet tend to stink after running around in the park, backyard, beach or walking the streets.
Who knows what he walks on  I can't handle stinky feet in my face in the middle of the night!

Edit- My husband reminded me that we've had Blu for 4 months now & he has only had 3 "real" baths.
I was waaaaaay off!

Charlie gets a bath only when she is gross from a pond or from playing in the mud or after the beach... in between if I feel she needs a little freshening up I use the bathing wipes...

George got a bath in the bathtub every couple of months for a long time and then I got tired of the trauma of nail cutting, and now he goes to the "spa" every month for a bath and nail trim. Maybe every six weeks if he isn't too smelly, but he loves being outside in the back yard and sunbathing, and a hot weim is a stinky weim.

Gemma gets a lot of baths. We only use shampoo every couple weeks(or if she really stinks), but she loves to get in the shower. We have a walk in shower and if you don't close the door quick behind you then she is coming in. Not real sure why she likes it so much, but I can't complain! Makes baths so much easier than any other dog I have had. She just comes in and tries to bite the water. Really funny.

Like they said, people differ on when and how often they bathe their weims. We bathe ours infrequently, and while they are inside dogs, they do run outside a lot and we do plenty of hunting, hiking, and swimming. I'm not sure what your dog's coat looks like, but even within the weim breed it does vary some. Generally our dogs get maybe three baths a year and while that sounds like much less than what others on this board do, I promise it's plenty. They get brushed once a week--more during shedding season--with a Zoom Groom to get the dead fur out. My dogs have zero smell (according to even my non-doggie friends) and nice glossie coats. Bathing every two weeks is really unnecessary unless you really want to do it and can actually strip the oils out of their coat...

Mine never got baths unless they got skunked or muddy. Or ocean salt water.
Where they most often swim, the waters in the lakes are extremely clean, fed from moving waters.
Recently with Connie in diapers and Bobs allergies i have been bathing them more often.
Very easy with a walk-in shower. They both love it.

You mentioned part Labrador? They get stinky. My friends with Labs give baths often. Weims are a bit different and
don't need as many. Just use something gentle.

It is really just your choice. Bath-time is kind of fun/funny in our house.
Not a chore.
When we lived in the city we used baby wipes often to get the city funk off their feet.

No real schedule in our house for baths... my 2 get bathed when they are A) Stinky or B) Dirty to the touch (like when you pet them and your hand gets dirty)

Sometimes it can be just weeks apart, and other times we go for many months without a bath for them.

My guys never get bathed. But we live in the city, and they don't smell.
We just walk out in the rain - because they won't go into the back yard
when it's raining, so I have to walk them. :?

My Dogs get a bath when they are boarded...probably 3-4 times a year...but do get brushed often to keep the skin healthy. If they get muddy they get hosed off...but since they don't like rain or getting their feet wet we very seldom have muddy dogs. Heck they will even potty on the porch before they would get their feet wet after a rain...

Hey All,

We've had Wakita for just over a year and Wichita for aprox. 10 months and I believe they've both had 3 baths each. Have found the Weims to be a very clean dog with only some quick wiping of the feet when they come in after a rain or over their bodies when they have been a bit dirtier. Also use the hose when we are outside to spray them too which Wakita loves but Wichita hates! :) We also spend alot of time in the water during the year (between the pool and the lake) so that probably saves us a few baths. I too have found it much easier to just have them climb (one at a time, that would be crowded if both came!!) into the shower with me and give them a bath that way. They think it's more of a game than something to clean them up. :D Out of all the different breeds of dogs we've had these guys have been the easiest by far to keep. Between their easy to cut nails, low shedding and just overall being clean dogs it has been great! Just keeping their ears clean and the water they drool all over the floor (very hard on the laminate) when they drink are the only things we've can think of as actually being 'work'. Even then they love having their ears massaged when we clean them and Wichita usually falls asleep when his are being done. Have to wake him so he can give his head a shake!!

My boy hates the bath..I try my best to keep him in, but he's too powerful and jumps out, so I need my hubby's help to bathe him...currently 1x every month + he's in the lake 3x a week. So I'm trying to introduce him to our stand up shower...he didnt seem to mind that as much. He loves the lake though..he's part fish I think
