baby ripping.. solved!

Postby hoochmamas » Fri Aug 22, 2008 7:36 am

so, hooch has a baby.. same baby since we got him.. and he loves to "nurse" on it for comfort. he has gone through 4 already.. regular wear and tear..
recently, he has discovered how to chew the nose off.. and pull out the stuffing.. then gets bent when i take it away.. to sew, or finally retire because it is unrepairable..
i bought him a tougher baby.. a different one, but i quickly realized it was not the same.. and he really was looking for something to suckle, and getting frustrated.. looking all over for the "real" baby..
brilliant idea coming up now..
i cut off a back pocket to a pair of old jeans.. and sewed it on over the nose of the baby.. violla! hooch has his baby back, and i won't have to sew it back together every night! it has been 3 days so far, and not a sign of a weakened stitch.. and he is happily carrying it everywhere, and nursing like a champ.
just thought i'd share..
here are some pics of little hooch and his baby..

Kasper is bad about this...he doesn't suckle toys...he just does it in his sleep. He likes stuffed toys and I buy him ones on clearance and if he tears them up fine. Well he's been doing good and not destroying the ones with the squeakers....low and behold I buy him a new one and it's now a faceless and semi stuffless lamb/sheep. I'll have to post the pics later! Love my weimy boy...I wouldn't trade him for the world!

Good idea! My Lu does the same thing! It's so funny! He acts like such a tough guy, but at bedtime, or when he gets upset, he gets his teddy bear and sucks on it. He's torn up many other toys, but not his bear. I thought he was so weird- I can't believe your dog does the same thing! Adorable though, isn't it? Here's a pic of Lu and his bear.

Hey great idea, I am always so worried Gabby is going to swallow the nose or eye, I think I will take off the nose and then sew the pocket on :)

warning.. he has now figured out how to get thru the pocket, too when he is really in a twitch.. i have 5 of them in "mama's repair shop" right now.. and one stinky stinky one still intact.. i just bought him a brand new one.. going to be sewing on that pocket tomorrow..
he looks so upset when he realizes he's been overzealous with his suckling..
and still will not accept any other substitute baby.. godog makes tough plushies that are so adorable.. he won't have it..

i love that he has a baby.. i don't love that he will pace the floors without one.. and keep mama up if i forgot to repair one..

Here's Sage's "suckler"

http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-flypage-25181

It lasts for awhile--Macy & Maya rip the squeakers and stuffing out, then Sage enjoys the rest.

Ellie Girl suckles on one of her stuffed animals also!? I just thought it was cuz she is so young. This was the 1st toy she got when we brought her home and she spoons with it ALL the time. She'll knead with her paws on either side of the toy face and suck on her furry nose! I've stuck my finger in her mouth while she's doing it and her little tongue goes a mile a minute! Funny.

Uh, yea, Drama suckles too, and by suckle I mean he shreds and eats everything I put in his cage. 3 dog beds, a homemade dog bed that was sowed up with 25lb fishing line and a couple dozen bed sheets now. He will literally eat every piece, it's kinda funny when you put a king size bed sheet in the cage and a week later there are just scraps of it left everywhere. Thank god I have a ton of bed sheets I don't use.

It must be a weim thing. Libby will even suckle on a blanket. She works it with her paws and goes to town. She's worn holes in two comforters that were on my boys' beds. They are a funny breed.

i no longer buy any bedding that isn't on sale.. hooch likes to "dig" in the blankets to make a comfy spot to settle in..
i have become quite the sewer..
but my boy's worth it..
he still only nurses on that one baby.. i believe we have gone thru at least a dozen by now.. but he absolutley will not settle without it.. they ARE a very funny breed..

Slade has one specific type of stuffed duckie that he likes to suck on. I can find them in the store when they get stinky, but lately he's been ripping them up! He never used to do that. Might have to try your jeans trick.

anywhere you find Hooch.. mint green baby is bound to be there, too.. sometimes i'll just sew sweatshirt over it if i don't have jeans around.. but the jeans do work the best.. he's had the same baby for a month now.. *knocks on wood*
