Jag came home from hiking yesterday and we noticed a cut on his back leg. It looks very different, like part of it is raised above the fur. We put some peroxide on it and are keeping an eye on it. Any ideas? Is it just a funny shaped cut? Thanks

Looks like a puncture wound. Was he running through trees/brush? Could be a twig that punctured the skin or something like that. The raised part could be from a little infection or if it was a twig puncture there could be a little piece of wood in there agitating it. Feel around it and make sure you don't feel anything under the skins surface. If you do, go to the vet to get it looked at. If not i would continue the HP and put some neosporin with some gauze wrap around it to keep it clean so it heals up pretty good.

P.S. It does look a little red around the wound, that is probably a little infected.

Jag was running through branches and trees yesterday. There doesn't feel like there is anything in the wound. We have just put some polysporin on it,hopefully that will help. We will keep a close eye on it tonight.

Yeah just keep a close eye on it... sometimes it helps to shave around the area just to get the true picture and to see if the infection spreads at all. I'm sure he will be fine. Good Luck

Not trying to start an uproar here, but I thought HP was old school now and that the thinking was that the bubbles it makes can actually help push dirt further down into the wound?

My youngest son was hospitalized with MRSA a few years ago and I think that is where I heard it. Anyone else here heard that?

I would nop use HP!! It will kill germs, but also kill new tissue. Use simple soap and water to clean and apply neosporin.

So today Jag was left alone like he is every Saturday. When we got home from work there was blood everywhere! Jag was picking at his leg. The so called cut on his leg , is not a cut. When we saw all the blood we rushed him to emergency. Jag has what is called histiocytoma ( a button tumor). It just appeared out of nowhere and it is protruding out of his skin. The doctor cleaned it up the best he could and bandaged it up and gave us antibiotics to take until we get to our vet the first of the week. Jag will have to have this cut off and have it analyzed to make sure that it is not cancer. The doctor is pretty sure that it is not.

Tomorrow he is left by himself again while we are at work. I will try to get someone to check in on him. He is starting to limp a little, you can tell that it is bothering him. My poor baby Jag.

Sherry, put an e-collar on him to keep him from getting at it. I know they are a pia, but it will keep him away from it. He probably needs a 30" one to be effective.

It is wrapped up now and he is not bothering with it at all since we got home. We do have one of those cone head things for him,but he freaks out when we put it on him.I really don't want to put that of him.

Fur Kids: We have a male Weim named Brady,
PostPosted: Sat Sep 27, 2008 5:55 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I WISH I HAD READ THIS EARLIER. Brady had a histiocytoma. I posted about it a couple months ago with a picture of it. Young dogs get them often and they are no big deal if they go away in a few weeks. It sounds like it has ulcerated which is good. when we took Brady to the vet they told us to keep it clean washing it 3 times a day with antibacterial soap and keep an eye on it. Brady did not have to have it surgically removed and YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO either. If you give it a week or 2 and it clears up on it's own it is not cancer. If it doesn't clear up then get it removed. it sounds like if your vet wants to remove it right away after he has only had it for a few days they are trying to get more MONEY out of you. It can last for up to 2 weeks and clears up on its own. The main problem can be the dog licking it or chewing it off. Brady did this but once we began cleaning it started to clear up.

Jag was home all day by himself and didn't touch his bandage. What a good boy!

Oh yes I am quite familiar with that. I have to be careful cause of my job, in evidence, I can easily be exposed to it. It is super scary stuff.
