Any advice?

Postby kcolsey » Fri May 07, 2010 5:18 pm

Since Wednesday morning, Gracie has had liquidy poop and little/no appetite. She has been acting pretty normally otherwise. I called the vet Wed. afternoon after I came home to find that she had 3 accidents (never happens!) in the house and she had vomited at least once. The vet said to fast her for 24 hours and then try the boiled chicken and rice. In addition, she suggested that I give Gracie Pepto Bismol. I have done everything that the vet suggested, but Gracie still has liquidy poop. I have given her Pedialyte to prevent dehydration. We are approaching the 72 hour mark, so I made a vet appt. for tomorrow and I will try to get a stool sample. My first challenge is how to get a stool sample when it literally squirts out of her...looking for creative suggestions. Also, any thoughts about what else I can try to settle her stomach? My poor girl! Thanks, in advance, for any thoughts on this.

This exact same thing happened to Lincoln last week. Since it's lasted so long I'd take her in and get a fecal and maybe test for giardia. If you can catch her while she's going you could try quickly putting a frisbee under her or even some tin foil or something. By the way, they didn't find anything in Lincoln's fecal except elevated bacteria levels and a couple days of metrodozinole (sp?) cleared everything up.

If she has already done her fast, try giving her some chicken and rice ... plain white rice and canned chicken. Just a little bit at first, see how she tolerates it.

At one vet visit they followed Jesse around with a ladle while I walked her around on a leash. Maybe you could try something similar like a shovel? Not sure if this would work ... Jesse didn't like the tech following her around with the ladle, which I can understand.

Thank you so much! I can only imagine what I'll look like following Gracie around with a ladle tomorrow morning... It will be worth a try though.

I wouldn't be surprised if she has elevated bacteria levels, but I really hope it's not Giardia. She is off leash in the woods a lot, so she could easily have picked something up.

Diarrhea, Vomiting and no appetite is not good! I hope she feels better soon. Let us know how the vet visit goes.

I've always wanted to put together a 'home dog kit'.
Why they ask for a big terd sample when they only need a small bit.
(maybe they want to select a specific part of the mound themselves)

I have a couple dozen of the sample tubes at home and the pee ones.
I use a pie plate to gather it. I will often just take a sample in and not bother with
appointments. I just need a piece of mind and silly to pay for a visit.

But yes. You need to take her in. Seems like an obstruction?
Good thoughts, feel better!

Thanks for all of your good ideas. I have been so worried about my poor girl. I was so happy that when I took Gracie out for a walk this morning to get her stool sample, she actually did a pretty solid poop. I used a plastic bowl because the ladle I had was too small. The bowl worked very well. The vet send the sample to the lab and the results won't be back until Monday. In the meantime, she put her on Metronidazole. She has been eating a little bit more today...plain chicken and sweet potatoes. I will let you know what the fecal sample tells us.

For urine samples we just use disposable tupperware so that may help you out! I would not worry too much until you get results from the vet. A variety of things can upset their tummies and it can take a few days to straighten itself out. You are doing the right thing by being vigilent and taking her to the vet. Good luck and hope she feels lost better soon. Also, canned pumpkin always helped our dog for diarrhea or constipation!
