A typical day in the life of you & your Weim?

Postby Gwyneth » Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:59 am

What's a typical day or week like for you and your Weim(s)?

Before I bring my puppy home I'm eager to hear some more firsthand accounts of the daily grind of life with Weims young and old.

Calvin has settled down considerably now (he's 1.5 years) so our typical weekday is get up, walk 30 minutes, then I get ready and he snoozes on the couch. He is in his crate with a dogwalker at noon, then when I get home we go on another 30 minute walk, he 'helps' me make dinner and then either chews a bone or sleeps on the couch. I know, ridiculously lazy.

HOWEVER. This is a pretty new pattern. For the first year, it was 'oh my lord do I have to take that dog on ANOTHER walk to try and calm him down?' and life was interrupted every 5 minutes to tell him 'no' or 'off' or 'stop'...luckily the cuteness just about makes up for it!!

Now that he's reached 1.5 years I can see a huge change in energy level and his love for a routine. He is thrown off by weekends when we're home...

7:30-8:00am - Wake up. Go downstairs, let Lincoln out of his crate, let him outside. Get ready for work.
8:30am - Feed Lincoln.
8:45am - Put him in his crate for the day while we go to work.
5:10pm - Come home and let him out. Tail is wagging a mile a minute :)
5:30pm - Out for an offleash hike with a friend who's got a weim(every night). In the winter we hike in the dark, so we put a flashing light on him.
6:30pm - Get home and eat dinner.
7:00pm - Feed Lincoln.
7:00-11:00pm - Do normal household stuff (clean, watch TV, internet, go shopping etc). Usually play with Lincoln a bit or do some training (show training, forcefetch, tricks etc).

That's a typical day for us. When he was younger, we would come home at lunch time to play and let him out.

This is Jax to a T! On weekends he just follows us around constantly and then grumps about because he can't take his naps in case we might do something interesting!

My four Wiems daily routine:

AM
6:30 - everyone up and ready for their day
7:00 - all four dogs out for their morning stroll/run through the backyard (1 acre and they use it all)
7:30 - breakfast
8:00 - I leave for work and they are free to roam - they do get a snack as I walk out the door. I also have a doggy door so they come and go as they please.
PM
4:00 - I'm home and they are just so excited to see me. We spend about 1/2 hour outside - rain or shine - where I do my daily poop scoop.
4:30 - dinner
5:00 - walk around the neighborhood if I can get all four to cooperate. If no cooperation, it's a quick walk to the open field for a 10 minute run
5:30 - sleep - and they continue to sleep until it's time for bed (unless I should happen to move - which makes them all get up to see what I'm doing).
10:00 - real bed time which is a quick trip outside, a couple of snacks for them and then three of the four climb into my bed for the night.
Weekends are completely different - usually we go to the local dog park for a couple of hours on Saturday or Sunday. Other than that, they are very content to do absolutely nothing. I have very lazy Weims - other than Rudy but having the doggy door really helps him with his activity level.

5:30A - Lick, lick, lick "Go lay down buddy, it isn't time yet"
6:00A - Breakfast, go outside, wake up my wife, then they go back to sleep until it is time to go.
7:30 - "Let's go for a ride" "Get in the truck"
7:45 - Arrive at my mother's house - she leaves the door ajar - they push in and go directly to the kitchen where they wait for morning treats from grandma.
8:00 - 5:30 - Harass squirrels, lay in sun, look for field mice in rocks, wait for the mail man to drop mail into the slot ... they know when it is time, terrorize mail man, sleep, eat lunch, repeat morning routine.
5:30 - They get picked up from grandma's house
6:00 - Eat dinner, sleep until it is time to go out.
7:30 - "Let's go for a ride"
8:00 - Evening hike/walk/run for an hour or so.
10:00 - Time for bed.

On the weekends, we keep the same feeding schedule and we usually head out around 10:00 AM to go do something outside - usually a hike or something ... we get them worn out early so that we can get on with our day.

We do a lot of things outside - mostly running and hiking, so we all get our exercise together.

pre:puppies-

7:00am up for potty walk, breakfast

8:15am back to bed with Dad-kids off to school, Mom off to work

3:pm big kids home from school-potty walk, lunch

6:30pm Mom home from work; outside for a 30-minute or so game of catch

9:30pm evening potty walk and an occasional play-date with Rigby (neighbor's blue Weim male)

10:30pm by now Misty not only knows it's bedtime but is giving me 'the face' telling ME to go to bed.

Here's hoping she'll teach Daisy to do the same as she gets older!!

When I fisrt got my girl (9 months)it was

7 am up potty, feed, crate then leave for work
noon come home on lunch hour potty and play for 15 minutes, then crate
5pm home from work potty, feed, dog park 2-4hours each night
weekends ( it is our time)spend playing, and at dog events, dog park

When she was 2.5 years we started taking classes about 2 times a week and going to the dog park on the other nights.

when she was about 4 she slowed down we still go to 1-3 classes and week, and maybe 2-3 to the park including weekends.

5-7am: Husband gets up, lets dogs out. Brings them to bed with me.
8am: I get up. Dogs run around the house with way too much enthusiasm.
9am: Feed them & I leave, putting them in their crates.
11am: I return. Let dogs out of crates and let them outside. If it's nice, I'll leave the door open.
1pm: Leave dogs again. Lock in crates.
3pm: Return, let dogs out, possibly leave door open.
5pm: Take dogs for walk, hike, or to dog park. This can be as short as 15 minutes, but an hour to two hours is more typical.
7pm: Come home, make dogs crate.
8pm: Feed dogs again.
9pm: Let dogs out of crates.
11pm or 12am: Let dogs out for pre-bed potty break.

Weekends are totally different routine. Which usually involves the dogs being completely exhausted.

4:30 am - almost usually within 20 minutes of that time she has her mid night potty break. Only 10 weeks but ready for her to sleep through the night.

6:30 am - I am up taking her out and quick walk around the property if she is willing (depends on the weather).

6:50 am - putting food in a toy that slowly lets food out while she plays with it. Keeps her distracted while I am getting ready.

7:30 am - leave for work, putting her in crate until Macy's Mom gets up.

8:30 am - noon - plays with mom, driving her half crazy when she has to get ready for work. Macy particularly loves when she blow dries her hair and trys to catch it.

5:00 pm- Get home and get Macy out of crate for a quick potty break then back to the apartment with her running all over the place making sure she pulls at least 3 toys out.

6:30 pm- Feeding time, back in the crate for a bit.

7:00 pm - 11:00 pm - Playing, napping, trips to petsmart to socialize, walks if weather is nice, and mostly spending time training keeping her busy so she doesn't drive us crazy.

I have class for a good 8 hours 2-3 times a week. Lil goes to doggie daycare on those days and the other days are filled with play dates, walks, and snuggling. She's about 10 months and is actually really laid back compared to most other weims.... so much so that I tend to refer to her as "The Lazy Weimaraner". My mom says the reason I think she's laid back is because I'm so high strung  .

At 2.5 years here is our schedule (non-weim is 17 year old shih tzu cross)

6:00 - Get up, let out dogs for a pee, prepare their breakfast and then they eat
7:45 - Let dogs out
8:00 - Dogs get a treat as I walk out the door
18:00 - Get home and let dogs out while I prepare their dinner
19:00 - Training, leash walk, free run, whatever needs to be done (~1 hr)
During our dinner - Marvin "settles" in the living room away from the table
22:00 - Outside one last time
22:00-24:00 - TV and cuddle time in our bed and then off to dog bed for the night

Most of the other time the dogs spend sleeping on our bed, the couch or on our feet at the computer desk. Weekends are much more flexible and usually include long hikes, training sessions, farm time or dog park visits. We also got in the habit of using other opportunities to train throughout the day things like stay, healing and working from a distance.

As a puppy, life was very different as he got up at 5:00 and we went home or arranged for him to be let out at lunch. We also crate trained until he was about 1 and then started leaving him out for short periods (15 mins) which slowly got lengthened to the whole day.
Enjoy life, the universe and everything!

Starr is 9 now. She gets up around 4 am. Goes outside, then back to bed while I shower and stuff. I feed her around 5:15 before I leave for work. She eats and goes back to bed with Jeremy. Back outside when daddy gets up around 7:30 and then she lounges around the house and probably sleeps in the bed all day while I'm at work. Once I am home she goes back outside and comes right back in b/c who knows what might happen if she can't see me. She follows me around everywhere. She eats again around 9 pm and then goes to bed with me. She is probably the laziest Weim ever.

5:30-6 am get up and go for a run with the dogs (off-leash or a combination of on- and off-leash) for an hour or more.

8:30 am, feed the dogs and put them outside while I go to work (husband has already gone to work). The dogs stay outside in the backyard throughout the day (we're in San Diego, so pretty good weather year round, although they have their dog houses under cover in case of rain/for shade etc)

4:15 pm my husband comes home and plays with them (at least that's what he tells me...I sometimes suspect that means him palying computer games while they wrestle with each other  )

6:30 pm I come home, the dogs get fed and husband and I eat dinner

8:30ish, we usually take the dogs for a walk around the neighbourhood, just as much for us to digest our invariably too-large meal and wines as for them to get out again.

10 ish; go to bed

I generally wake the same time on weekends, even when I want to sleep in, but that's about all that stays the same. I don't usually run with them in the morning, but instead they'll get an outing at some point during the day, whether it's to beach, or for a hike or whatever. Best case scenario for them is a full day hike off-leash. They're in heaven then :)
